barney awesome

I’m a little weird.

My parents taped a poem by Edgar Guest to every bathroom mirror in our house.  We’re not particually poetic folk, but they really liked what it stood for.

The tradition started with Grandpa Miller – “Can’t” is his favorite poem – and runs through the whole family.  At family reunions all the grandkids have been known to spontaneously recite the last stanza by memory.  It’s a little cultish but, hey, we’re all a little weird.  The last two stanzas are my favorite.

Can’t is a word none should speak without blushing;
To utter it should be a symbol of shame;
Ambition and courage it daily is crushing;
It blights a man’s purpose and shortens his aim.
Despise it with all of your hatred of error;
Refuse it the lodgment it seeks in your brain;
Arm against it as a creature of terror,
And all that you dream of you some day shall gain.
Can’t is the word that is foe to ambition,
An enemy ambushed to shatter your will;
Its prey is forever the man with a mission
And bows but to courage and patience and skill.
Hate it, with hatred that’s deep and undying,
For once it is welcomed ’twill break any man;
Whatever the goal you are seeking, keep trying
And answer this demon by saying: “I can.”
– Edgar Guest

Why Superhero Experiments Exists!

I am obsessed with understanding what it takes for people to believe that they can actually do things.  Like a chemist understands the elements of the periodic table, I want to know which 4 elements mix together and turn an “I could never travel to Japan even though I’ve dreamed of it since I was a child” to “Japan changed my life.”

Welcome to my diabolical lab where we experiment with the science of life.  I post every week.  Here’s a little tour to get you started.

I really hope it makes you smile.

My favorite posts!

Fear: the Incognito Supervillan – A battle cry against what holds us back everyday, this mini-manifesto is my most favoritest thing to ever leave my keyboard.

Building Epic Relationships in 1 Hour – A longer post on the science of building epic relationships.  Friends have used the 36 questions listed at the end to facilitate workshops, woo significant others, and generally have more awesome conversations. But remember, with great power comes great responsibility.

The Most Epic Smile Inducing Marathon Ever – Try not to smile.  I dare you 🙂

Why it’s my Birthday Every Month – How cool it is to have friends send you pictures of themselves eating pizza, playing on the beach, and generally doing fun things once a month for their ‘Monthbirthday”?  At least as cool as finding the whole Star Wars trilogy DVD set at home.  I know what you’re thinking.  Wow, right?

The World Needs Superheroes – Our first post and the reason Superhero Experiments started.  They say it aged like wine.

Give me a hollar!

I love giving epic talks about entrepreneurship, social change, and generally being awesome.  If you’re looking for someone to fire up your organization, you can check out a talk I gave at TEDx about my time as an illegal immigrant in Cuba here or this keynote for the Triangle Youth Leadership Conference.

If professional lists of acollades tickle your fancy, I’m on LinkedIn here.

And most importantly, if I can ever help you out, give me a hollar.
